Cu Chi Tunnels

Overview

While visiting the War Remnants Museum gives you a theoretical glimpse of the Vietnam War, wandering around a small area of Cu Chi Tunnels, a popular tourist attraction in Vietnam, allows you to have real-life experiences and learn about Vietnam’s mind-blowing military strategy that was instrumental in their landslide victory against the US and South Vietnamese forces.

 Cu Chi tunnel

Billing itself as Asia’s longest underground system, Cu Chi Tunnels, around 1.5 hours away from District 1, can even be more impressive than you’ve ever imagined.

What to see

It may be interesting to know that the part of Cu Chi Tunnels that is open for the general public is only peanuts compared to the whole underground system that has been built. Upon arrival at the site, you are required to buy an admission ticket, which is VND 35,000 (~USD 1.6) for an adult. After being guided to the theatre hall, where you get to watch a documentary about the construction of the tunnel system and how Vietnamese soldiers lived under the Earth’s surface before proceeding to the bunkers, trapdoors, constructed living areas, storage facilities, command centres and kitchens.

Do not forget to crawl through the tunnels to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience of being 10 meters below the ground. Many people hesitate to do this at first, but they feel pretty much satisfied after finishing the route. An important tip that needs mentioning is always to follow the person in front of you so as not to get lost.
